What Exactly is Self Storage?

Nearly one in 10 households uses 儲存倉 to store their surplus goods. In the past, self storage was limited to renting a “storage unit” from a nearby storage facility. But, recently, portable and ship–to-store options are available. Aside from that, every self-storage facility is different. In the past almost all self-storage facilities consisted of metal buildings with roll up garage doors. These were conveniently located between commercial and residential areas in every city. Many amenities are available today in self-storage facilities, such as climate controlled units and units with interior access, multiple stories, and different access and security options.

The most common use of self storage is to rent a traditional self storage unit at a local self storage facility. Self Storage is often used during transitions such as:

Military deployment
College/semester breaks
Business excess (inventory/equipment, supplies, etc.

Self storage is easy to rent. Storage unit rentals are usually monthly and typically take less than an hour from the moment you select a facility to the time when you can start moving your belongings in your new unit. You must bring your items to self-storage facilities and load them into the unit. Many storage facilities allow you to use a rental truck to load all your belongings. You may be able to get a discount or free use of the truck when you move in.

Storage facilities often charge an administration fee or move-in fee. You are the only person who can access your storage unit once you have signed your lease. Many storage facilities require you to purchase insurance for your goods. Sometimes, your homeowner’s insurance will cover your storage unit. If not, most facilities have insurance you can buy.

You must supply your own lock. However, most facilities will provide a lock for you as a standard practice. The most secure lock type is the disk lock. Other security measures are often used in self storage facilities, including:

Fenced in property
Electronic Gate Access
Security Surveillance Cams
Bright Lighting
On-site managers

Most storage facilities have both office hours and gate hours. They typically operate during weekdays and only have limited hours on weekends. Gate hours are the hours you can gain access to your unit from the property. These hours are extended beyond regular office hours and typically take place between 6am-10pm seven days a semaine.
